Fenders: Maybe?
The problem with working from 2pm to midnight is that after my dinner break at around 7, I'm basically at my desk until quitting time. If I do get up for a drink/snack/etc, by 9 or so it's too dark to see out the break room window. So I was rather surprised to see steady, determined rainfall as I exited the building for my ride home.
The shortest routes between work and home are about four miles long, but bicycles also need to account for elevation changes, so my ride in is about 4.4 miles in 20 minutes, and my ride home is about 6.2 miles in 40 minutes. Taking the morning route home would probably still take 40 minutes, because hill. I take a detour around the biggest elevation change, and get home in one piece instead of leaving my lungs on the road. But in the event of rain, six miles is a lot less attractive.
But I must say that the ride ended up far better than I feared, on account of three things:
- There's a bus that leaves downtown at 12:30, which stops about two miles from my place - and most importantly, on the top of the big hill.
- In spite of not having my raincoat with me, my helmet and reflective vest proved pretty adept at deflecting the rain. The only parts of me that really got wet were my arms and legs.
- I think the fenders worked! That's really just a wild guess because the rest of me still got pretty wet. But I definitely didn't have muck on my shins (from the front tire) or up my back (from the rear tire). So... win? Sure, win.
Next move: figure out how to keep my thighs from getting soaked to the bone. Or bust out the board shorts.
And with that little update I depart, for I have Things To Do. I leave you with a little love from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
